When you view the search results, sometimes you see some additional links to other pages, including a single search result for the page. This often happens when the search engine finds your query navigation, and you want to find some specific page on the site. For example, if you want to visit the homepage of WordPress, Instead of typing «wordpress.org» or «wordpress.com» in the browser address bar, you can type «wordpress» in the search form. The possibility exists that you want to get into a WordPress page, instead of finding sites that mention the word «wordpress».
Search engines do not always use the same mechanisms, which direct you to the page, but there is a significant number of similarities. For example, using the word «wordpress» in search engine Google, you will see the homepage wordpress.org top of search results as well as several links to pages on this site, including the page where you can download the software, as well as a page with links to support forums. In a similar finding in Yahoo you will see the homepage wordpress.com – accommodation services of blogs, as well as additional pages of the categories of blogs, which can be found on the page.
Why does Google show site where you can download the software, and Yahoo shows- accommodation services blogs?
Good question.
There are many questions about how search engines handle navigational queries, and how they determine what site and how quick links to show for them.
It often seems that these quick links use words that are abbreviated versions of the anchor text used in links to internal pages, but the choice of words used in those references, is in some sense a mystery. A recent patent from Yahoo explains how the machine selects the text for quick reference that will appear to users in the search results.
It also explains why the search engine shows quick links instead of displaying some results from the same page:
If the results are presented in the form of URL-addresses, or fragments of popular pages in the domain apple.com, then the user will probably just clicked on a link to the popular page on which he wanted to go originally. However, the area of search result pages is small, and, therefore, is valuable, therefore, show many URL-addresses, fragments of pages and other text is often impractical.
The usual solution – show quick links to popular pages on your site. There are text links, usually with short labels, which indicate that the page is located within the site. This tactic reduces the use of the area of the search results page, and at the same time successfully copes with the task of reducing the number of steps that the user must take to achieve the goal. A number of commercial search engines, including Google and Yahoo, use these quick links.
